Vocal cord polyps are benign (non-cancerous) rounded bumps on the surface of usually one vocal cord. They are thought to form as a result of trauma to the vocal cords, for example after a hard cough or excessive voice use. This can cause a tiny amount of bleeding under the surface of the vocal cord, leading to the formation of the polyp.

The main symptom of vocal cord polyps is the hoarseness of the voice. Hoarseness can be mild or severe depending on the size and location of the polyp.

Vocal cord polyps are best diagnosed by examination of the vocal cords with high-resolution videostroboscopy by a fellowship-trained laryngologist.

Treatment for vocal cord polyps depends on many factors. Some smaller polyps can get better or go away with a combination of voice rest or voice therapy, but most require surgical removal. It is recommended to undergo voice therapy as part of your treatment even if you have surgery to remove the polyp. This will help ensure your best vocal recovery and reduce the chance of developing another polyp in the future.
